L-Glutamine Enhances Mucosal Immunity and Hormonal Status in Combat-Sport Athletes

This randomized crossover trial (n=21 national-level combat-sport athletes) administered L-glutamine at 0.3 g/kg body weight/day — approximately 18–21 g/day for an average athlete — for 3 weeks following intensive training. Supplementation significantly increased salivary secretory IgA (the primary mucosal antibody and first line of immune defense), nitric oxide, and the testosterone-to-cortisol ratio, while the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) was significantly reduced compared to placebo (p<0.01). In contrast, the placebo group showed a significant decline in testosterone and increase in cortisol — markers of catabolic overtraining stress — while the glutamine group maintained hormonal balance. Mood scores were also significantly better in the glutamine group. This trial provides direct evidence that L-glutamine supplementation attenuates training-induced immune suppression and hormonal dysregulation. Dose note: The dose used (~18–21 g/day) substantially exceeds this supplement's 3.15 g. Whether comparable immune benefits are achievable at 3.15 g/day has not been established in this population.

Glutamine (6 g/day) Reduces Muscle Damage Markers in Professional Basketball Players

This double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study (n=12 professional basketball players) administered 6 g/day of oral L-glutamine for 20 consecutive days during a high-demand competition season involving twice-daily training. Glutamine supplementation produced significantly lower circulating levels of creatine kinase (CK) and myoglobin — two established blood biomarkers of exercise-induced muscle damage — compared to placebo. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), a stress hormone that drives cortisol release, was also significantly reduced in the glutamine group, and cortisol levels remained stable rather than rising, supporting a less catabolic physiological state. Testosterone levels were maintained throughout, suggesting a preserved anabolic hormonal profile. The authors conclude that glutamine supplementation attenuates exercise-induced muscle damage in predominantly eccentric sport disciplines. Dose comparison: 6 g/day — approximately double this supplement's 3.15 g/day. Whether 3.15 g/day produces the same degree of attenuation in muscle damage markers remains untested in a published RCT.
